We aren’t going to talk about how late this is. We aren’t going to speak about how this was two years ago. We are not going to acknowledge how I am always disastrously late to everything and move on, so I can have some semblance of consistency on my blog and have a post for each little win I have. Cheers, bud.
After being gently nudged by a friend, I drummed up a flash fiction story for Spindle House Press’ Dark Tales from the Tarot. The theme was based on ‘The World’ card, and I hyper focused on the idea of ‘completeness’ stemming from absolute consumption, and a sprinkle of Alice In Wonderland levels of hunger and curiosity.
In truth, this competition finally pulled an idea out of me that had been sat in scraps for years, where I learned about cenotes, and from a long lasting trauma of DyE’s music video for Fantasy. Maybe the comparison I pulled was a little too heavy-handed from the latter, but it happens.
I was proper chuffed over not only pulling a story together out of the dregs of an idea that’d haunted me for years, but winning a competition with it as well. I kept thinking that because I found the image of a mirror-world against a cenote so striking that it was destined to be some sprawling tome. But, in truth, sometimes a flash fiction is more than enough; sometimes it just fits, and there we go.
So, follow the below if you’d like to go and read ‘The Fall’, and thanks again to Spindle House Press for choosing my story, and for the opportunity to pull that writing worm out of my head and put it to bed.
